The success of twitter: simple, few rules

December 13, 2009

According to Twitter_Tips, twitter has no rules. There is certainly no simple guide that explains how to use it and what you can and can’t do. You just have to get in there and tweet. It may be the lack of rules that accounts for its popularity – it enables emergent networks to develop organically in a way that cannot be predicted in advance. The rules that do exist in twitter are imbedded in the tool itself, and in its interface. 140 characters max. per post. Designers know that constraints are often useful because they limit what would otherwise be unlimited possibilities. Too many options freeze us in our tracks. Simpler games (with simple rules) are less threatening, are more inviting, and are easier to play.
