“Rocky” earns $60K for Earthquake Appeal
A large boulder that crashed into a Christchurch home during the recent earthquake has been sold on TradeMe for $60,000. The owner, Phil Johnson, described the rock as “in pristine condition (just a little bit of concrete dust). Suitable for garden feature, or as in our case a magnificent addition to your living area”. The well illustrated ad, and the entertaining questions and answers that were posted in response, demonstrates how humour can help in such a terrible time. NZSki.com‘s winning bid of $50,000 (in addition to an earlier bid for $10,000) will be donated to the Earthquake Appeal. The story was picked up local media, including stuff.co.nz, the Independent Online, and by overseas media, such as the Washington Post, and the Sydney Morning Herald. Apparently, a book telling the story of Rocky might follow.
